Vampires and Angels

An AMV--Anime Music Video--that I thought was good. I'm a huge fan of VAMPIRE HUNTER D: BLOODLUST--it's a beautifully done movie that captures a lot of what I try to do in my own storytelling. The song isn't bad either.

Note: Possible spoilers for the movie. Be warned!

Varied reading

I thought I'd take a shot at a meme style thing, because I thought it'd make for an interesting post...if anyone glancing at this wants to pick it up, go right ahead!

The idea is to look at the nearest stack or shelf of books and list the titles found thereupon.  Here's one of mine, picked from the four nearest stacks:

Spider-Man: Down These Mean Streets by Keith R. A. DeCandido
Paradise Lost and Other Poems by John Milton
Don Quixote by Miguel Cervantes, translated by Walter Starkie
Coleridge: Poems and Prose by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Guide to Contentment by Archbishop Fulton Sheen
The Wayfarer Redemption by Sara Douglass (which, by the by, I was thoroughly disgusted with after sixty pages, and which I intend to get rid of...one of these days)
Treasures of Fantasy, a collection edited by Magaret Weis and Tracy Hickman
The Tolkien Reader by J. R. R. Tolkien
The Tough Guide to Fantasy Land by Diana Wynne Jones
Flashing Swords #1, ed. Lin Carter
Ecclesiastical History, Vol. 1 by Eusebius (Loeb Classical Library)

That's an odd grouping even for me...books actually on my shelves tend to be slightly less bizarre/varied.

Shall I compare thee to a poetic form?

I am, of course, none other than blank verse.
I don't know where I'm going, yes, quite right;
And when I get there (if I ever do)
I might not recognise it. So? Your point?
Why should I have a destination set?
I'm relatively happy as I am,
And wouldn't want to be forever aimed
Towards some future path or special goal.
It's not to do with laziness, as such.
It's just that one the whole I'd rather not
Be bothered - so I drift contentedly;
An underrated way of life, I find.
What Poetry Form Are You?

I gotta admit, I am fond of Shakespeare, especially them tragedies.

The straight facts: Questions about a character

Snagged from James Enge.  I'll do Jalazar Flinteye here, then maybe do Shabak some other time, if I'm at a loss for good posts.

(Background: Flinteye is a space opera character)

1 - What is your character's favorite color? Does he own anything that color?

I know this sounds cheesy, but black.  His preferred dress is a black vest, gun belt, and loose pants which don't slow his movements.

2 - Your character wants to read a book or rent a movie - what would he/she choose?

Jalazar reads, oddly enough, usually military history, martial arts manuals, that sort of thing.

3 - Does your character have any siblings? Do they get along?

My first Flinteye novel, currently unpublished, is called Flinteye.  Someday, God willing, I hope to write a book called Jalazar.  This question will be answered then and not before.

4 - Has your character ever had a hangover? How did it happen?

Yep.  Jalazar's not what I would call an alcoholic, but he enjoys a good beer.  Sometimes several.  And that several can really add up when he's in a foul mood.

5 - What is your character's main mode of transportation?

He's got a ship called the Flint Shard for interplanetary travel.  Once he's on the ground, usually whatever his employer has provided if he's doing bodyguard or mercenary work, and whatever he can rent, or just his own two feet, if he's after a bounty.
